A Touch of the Ethereal: Said Sara’s “Then There You Are” by David Benson

David Benson, also known by his stage name Said Sara, is a man of many roles. When he's not immersing himself in the heavy, aggressive sounds of Acephalix, a death metal band, he's shaping young minds as a special education teacher in San Francisco. But it’s under the Said Sara moniker that Benson reveals a more eclectic and poignant musical side, as exemplified in his latest single, "Then There You Are." This track marks a distinct departure from his metal roots, delving into a softer, yet deeply resonant, musical territory.

"Then There You Are" is a heartfelt homage to those who have passed away but continue to be felt in the lives of the living. Benson describes the song as "emphatic but affectionate," suggesting that the departed might still be watching over us, manifesting in nature or simply lingering in the air. Through this contemplative lens, the track invites listeners to consider the subtle signs of presence that can offer comfort and connection, even in absence.

The song was meticulously crafted at The Guest Room and Yosemite Studios in San Francisco, with mastering by Jesse Nichols at Oakland's Atomic Garden West. Said Sara's creation is predominantly acoustic, featuring Benson's soulful vocals and guitar work, but it's enriched with the addition of piano, bodhran, and electronic elements. This combination results in a near-perfect sonic landscape that enhances the song’s emotional depth and introspective quality.

Drawing comparisons to the likes of Billy Corgan of Smashing Pumpkins and Ed Kowalczyk of Live, Benson's performance on "Then There You Are" is haunting and vivid. His earnest, forceful delivery, coupled with roots-meet-folk guitar work, creates a powerful yet gentle atmosphere. The song's dynamic nature invites listeners to immerse themselves in its lush, evocative soundscape, making it a standout piece in Said Sara’s evolving musical journey.
